Kate Spade: Struggling With The Stigma Of Depression – TMS Center at Southeastern Psychiatric Associates

Our heart goes out to family and friends of Kate Spade.

Kate Spade was an American fashion designer and the founder and former co-owner of Kate Spade New York. On Tuesday, June 5th, 2018, Kate was found dead in apparent suicide in her New York home.

As an American icon, people may have assumed that she had it all and lived a fulfilling life, but it was known in her family, that Kate struggled with depression and often self medicated with alcohol. Enduring years of depression, Kate refused to seek help due to the stigma of mental illness.

Her passing is a brokenhearted reminder that depression can affect all people. It affects people regardless of age, geographic location, demographic, or social position. Depression does not discriminate.

With the stigma of depression, battling depression is hard! Hard to talk about and hard to confront. The stigma of depression may make us feel reluctant to seek treatment or help. And it can often include a lack of understanding from those we care about the most; our friends and family, but we encourage those struggling to challenge the stigma and seek help.

If you feel you or a loved one is in distress and could be struggling with suicide, we encourage you to please get help.
