Curious about TMS? You're not alone.

Each season, we hear from individuals who are ready to take the next step in their mental health journey—but still have important questions about Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). This spring, we’re addressing the top five most common questions we hear in our clinic.

We sat down with Dr. Gary Warstadt a leading provider at Southeastern Psychiatric Associates and one of the South Shore’s most experienced TMS clinicians, to share straightforward answers and expert insight.

1. Is TMS safe?
Yes. TMS is FDA-cleared and has been used safely in clinical practice for over a decade. It’s non-invasive, does not require anesthesia, and has no systemic side effects. Most patients tolerate the treatment very well and are able to return to daily activities right away. TMS has about the same very low likelihood (1 in 1000 chance) as antidepressant medications of inducing a seizure, that is its only possible serious side effect

2. Does TMS hurt?
Most people describe the sensation as a light tapping on the scalp. While some patients feel mild discomfort at first, this typically fades after the first few sessions. Our team is highly experienced and works closely with each individual to ensure a comfortable experience.

3. How long does a session take?
A typical session lasts about 15 minutes. Treatments are usually scheduled five days a week for four to six weeks, depending on your personalized plan. There’s no downtime afterward—you can go right back to your day.

4. Will I need to stop taking my current medications?
No.In fact, if you are currently on medications we recommend you continue them, at least until after the treatments are finished. After that, if you wish to try coming off, do this under the guidance of your prescriber.

TMS itself can be used with or without medication. Some patients come to us looking for a natural alternative to antidepressants, while others find TMS works well alongside their current treatment. We’ll work with you and your care team to find the right approach.

5. When will I start to feel better?
Some patients notice early improvements within the first two weeks, while others may begin to feel changes later in the course of treatment. TMS works gradually by helping the brain form healthier pathways over time.
